My Project

First grade is the year students learn to read! Reading opens doors to the world! My district has a reading program that is explicit and systematic, but not engaging. The materials I am asking for are resources for teaching reading that makes it memorable, fun, and engaging! These posters empower students in decoding and encoding because they unlock the secrets to phonics in a meaningful way!

With Secret Stories, I can differentiate instruction quickly and easily!

In fact, differentiation is as easy as hanging the posters on the wall and sharing these silly stories as they come up! Students can use the sound/spellings they are ready for, instead of waiting for our curriculum to teach the sound/spelling! I envision students looking at the wall to find the correct sound/spelling while writing in their journals during independent reading time, and while buddy reading. My hope is to empower the students so they will teach each other about the Secret Stories during literacy centers. It's important to me that my students know the teacher is not the only teacher in the room! Every student is a teacher! Secret Stories is accessible to all and is a vessel for my students to deepen their understanding of the English language.

I have a very diverse classroom. Students come from all socio-economic backgrounds. Some students begin first grade as fluent readers, while others are still learning their alphabet sounds. I have students who will qualify for the Gifted and Talented program, and others that qualify for Special Education services. All of these students are in one classroom. We are a community of learners who quickly become a classroom family! These materials will enhance the learning and enjoyment in our little community!
