My Students

I teach in a small public school in a big city. I am the general education teacher in an integrated co-teaching class. Around 40% of my students have individualized education programs, meaning that they have either learning disabilities, physical or psychological needs that are met through specialized instruction.

Our school is passionate about our progressive and rigorous curriculum, which involves lots of hands-on work, including multi-disciplinary projects, art, and field trips throughout the grades.

My students are very diverse, beyond their learning styles and capabilities. They come from a wide array of racial and ethnic backgrounds, and from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic circumstances. Many students are the children of immigrants, while others are themselves new to our country. Our curriculum seeks to build community among the children while also celebrating their differences.

My Project

At Wyckoff House Museum, experienced educators will help my students time-travel to the 1650s. By visiting his home, they will learn about Pieter Claesen Wyckoff, an indentured servant whose rags-to-riches story encompasses many important aspects of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. This field trip will be a centerpiece of our study of this colony, which established many norms that still exist today in New York, from ethnic diversity to a focus on trade and finance.

My fourth graders hunger for hands-on experiences that bring the past to life.

The artifacts and furniture at Wyckoff are exact replicas of those in use in colonial New Netherland. The huge hearth at which meals were cooked, the spinning wheel, agricultural implements, and many more objects will give my students a visceral understanding of colonial life. And Pieter's journey from indentured servitude to slave-owner will introduce complex and important historical information. In addition to the house tour and discussion, my students will get the chance to try out colonial games and toys, to better understand what childhood was like in that time and place.

I have taken many groups of fourth graders to Wyckoff House Museum, and have always found it to be an amazing experience that makes the past real to the kids.
