My Students

I work in the South Bronx and I provide speech therapy to students who range from ages 5-10 years old and who have special needs, specifically Autism. Many of my students are non-verbal or minimally verbal, and they face challenges every day with communicating with peers and adults both at school and in their communities. They each have Individualized Education Plans (IEP's), which cater to their individual skills and needs, and allow them to receive services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. My students learn and grow each day at school and they are always appreciative of new materials and learning opportunities!

My Project

For my project, I am asking for a series of board games that target language skills including comprehension, predicting, reading for details, following directions, context clues, and sequencing. These games will help my students make progress towards their speech and language goals in a fun and motivating way, and at the same time, target social skills including turn-taking and conversation.

The second thing I am asking for is an “echo” microphone, which I will use throughout the school day to help improve student’s abilities to project their voices and share what they have to say!

The microphone will also be used with the “storytelling lapboard” for when students retell stories. The lapboard will be used with story manipulatives as a visual for students when listening to an oral reading of a story. This will aid in their abilities to comprehend the story and to answer questions about the character, settings, and plot.

I am also asking for two “OSMO- Genius starter kits for iPads” for ages 6-10, and for preschool ages. These kits go along with an iPad and they each come with manipulatives so that students can interact during the different programs. The kits include activities that target skills such as basic concepts including shapes, numbers, letters, and vocabulary words, as well as problem-solving and creative drawing skills.

Lastly, for my project, I am requesting basic supplies including laminating sheets and construction paper so that I can create visuals to go along with the games which will help the students better understand the rules of the games, and improve upon turn-taking, following directions, and conversational skills.
