My Project

Imagine that you can't speak. Imagine that others around you assume you don't think either. In order to have your needs met, you might "act out" or do something unexpected; the only way others will pay attention to you. This is what life was like for our non-verbal students before they had augmentative and alternative communication and gained their voice. After a year of assistive technology trials, the students at our school are now able to use their own personal devices to make requests, respond/participate in academic material, ask questions, and socialize with one another. Their interests and unique personalities have begun to shine through despite many challenges. With all the medical issues they have had to weather pre and post COVID, our educators want to ensure our students can express how they are feeling so we can foster a happy and healthy learning environment. I am requesting a combination of augmentative alternative communication guides/books, socio-emotional games and supplies needed to form a "Core Word of the Week" program targeted to include emotional literacy and social skills. With the materials in the list, I can engage these students to learn a new word every week that we can practice daily, leading to a social group on Friday where they can use their knowledge in context, while interacting with one another and discussing feelings. My hope is that the materials I have requested can allow this project to be both safe and hands-on to encourage learning in action. Please help us improve the self-advocacy skills of our students as they learn to communicate!
