Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As Psychiatric Social Workers, we provide direct individual counseling services to students having social-emotional difficulties, including those with depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, and self-harm behaviors. Although these students face significantly difficult challenges daily, they continue to show their strengths through their brightness, talent, creativity, resiliency, and ability to take initiative to seek support! Apart from this direct work, we also lead preventative services, such as mental health-related classroom presentations and school lunch events/campaigns.
These events allow us to engage with students in hopes of breaking mental health stigma, educating, and reaching students who are struggling and are unaware of these supports at school.
Although it sounds SILLY, our students are more likely to come to our events and join us in learning if snacks or prizes are provided! (Who doesn't love a snack?!) These things make them HAPPY! The "Large Rolling White Board" listed also allows us to share mental health topics/facts/information with our students during lunchtime. Our goal for this project is to find prizes, snacks, and fidgets that will create greater interest in students to engage with us so we reach more students and address/prevent any social-emotional concerns.
