My Project

The month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As a mental health counselor for an elementary school for about 700 students in TK-6th, it is important to spread and encourage mental health awareness for students of all ages to encourage healthy coping, emotion regulation, positive relationships with peers, and a welcoming school climate! In working with my students, I see how schoolwide activities brings everyone together to embrace community building.

By conducting a schoolwide activity during Mental Health Awareness Week at recess time, students will have an opportunity to learn about mental health, destigmatize common myths, and learn strategies for coping with really big feelings, because we all sure deal with those!

Students will come up to a table during recess and answer questions related to mental health. Students will then have an opportunity to spin the prize wheel to earn either a candy, fidget bracelet, or sensory stickers. Students will learn how sensory stickers, fidget bracelets, and foods, like candy can be used for mindfulness and grounding to promote healthy coping.
