My Students

Research shows that kids who are actively involved in music and who play it or sing it regularly do better in reading and math when they start school, are better able to focus and control their bodies, play better with others and have higher self-esteem. Music is a daily activity in my class.

In my specialized preschool program, I have students with many different learning abilities.

Children range from age 3 to 5 years old. Some of my students have speech language needs. Some are English Language Learners, have cognitive impairments and are in need of alternative curriculum that is adaptable to their individual learning styles. The goal is to have my students join with typically developing peers as often as possible and music is often a very successful joining activity for my group. We are trying to incorporate more development and increasing kindergarten expectations as early as possible. Through use of music, we can keep children moving and focusing on the directions within the music, teach positional concepts and often build important "learner skills" needed to join in during large group activities.

My Project

During Hello Time. a music helper gets to choose 1-3 songs that the class will participate in during the day. The children can choose from pre-selected songs found on YouTube or songs directly related to our current theme. I have found that during our music time materials and music available can help support the students in getting important movement breaks during extended periods of sitting or on those raining inside days. My students need egg shakers, scarves, bean bags, musical CDs, storage bins and a storage tower to enhance our music and learning center/group time. By having an accessible storage tower and bins of music materials such as bean bags, sticks, scarves and CDs, and through use of an iPod purchased by our PTO, students will be able to access music during their free choice time in addition to "Hello Time" and Story Time. Students can learn many important concepts by joining in during action and movement songs. Exposure to the alphabet, positional concepts, counting and patterns are all important so they will develop and bring this knowledge with them into kindergarten.

Each song sung, musical instrument experienced, and musical appreciation provides teachers and families with insights into a child’s interests and abilities and allows children to express what they know.

Participating in music activities leads children to adopt approaches to learning that they can generalize to other content using creativity, focus on task, and social interaction to solve a problem. Plus, children tend to listen to sung directions, making transitions much easier.
