My Students

My classroom is organized chaos. We are always having fun while we are learning! By creating a classroom economy they are learning and having fun at the same time!

My school is full of students from poverty.

I teach 5th and 6th graders at a low socioeconomic school. The majority of our students come from poverty and many receive free or reduced lunches. Some students have never been out of our town, much less see how an economy works by going shopping. These students will be truly grateful for an opportunity to earn prizes that they otherwise couldn't afford.

My Project

This year I am working with our history teacher to create classroom economies. Students will have jobs were they earn "money" and can "purchase" items from our store. This is a treat for my students because many have never even been to a store. I am asking for seat organizers so that students have a place to keep their money and supplies close by. This will also help them keep track of everything and not lose it. I have requested colored paper as well so I can print our money on it. Students will be able to shop at my store, as well as the history teachers’ store. Through pricing, we will teach inflation, supply and demand, budgeting, earning a wage, etc.

This project will help my students develop life skills such as earning and budgeting their "money," how to shop, how to compare prices, and much more.

Coming from an area of poverty, students will appreciate being able to get items that they otherwise couldn't afford for completing small classroom tasks.
