My Project

Hello Generous Donors!

Thank you for considering giving your hard-earned money to our upper elementary age special needs classroom.

This project is a multi-faceted project, in that it includes several items addressing a few areas of need.

First, the theme of this year's classroom (garden theme) was chosen with our students in mind to help them remain calm. We have students who have behavioral challenges, who have attention challenges, who have experienced trauma, who just need a safe and calm environment, etc... It is my aim every year to create a learning space for students so that each one, no matter their specific challenges, can learn at their maximum potential possible. I believe a garden theme may help our students.

Secondly, student achievement requires motivation. Students will work (even through their own challenges) when they have something fun to look forward to. Legos are a way for boys and girls alike to decompress after a challenging lesson or even when they're having a not-so-good day. Sometimes students have a behavior plan that includes reinforcement time (and sometimes students choose building time). I'd like to add the Lego sets to our classroom for positive reinforcement for students who earn it.

Thirdly, our classroom is in a school community that is Title 1, which means most students come from low income households. Throughout the school year, every year, students come to school hungry. Some students have food insecurities, as well, and are hungry, sometimes even immediately after lunch. Provided that parents/guardians give written permission regarding food/allergies, I have a student pantry each year because it has been proven in many studies that a student cannot focus or learn while they're hungry. My students have learning challenges that they already deal with; they don't need to worry about hunger too.
