This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Think about a moment in which music became an important part of your life; a song that accompanied you, a dance you can't forget, a concert you shared. Music class is giving my students many of this unforgettable experiences and with your help I would like to make their experience even richer!

My school is located between the cities of Bell and Cudahy, in the southern part of Los Angeles.

The majority of the students are part of 1st and 2nd generation of Latino families that have immigrated to the country to provide a better life for their loved ones. Living in an area that is considered of high poverty, these kids are probably not very different from the ones that attend other schools around. Their families have stories of struggle, that are fueled with an imperious desire to improve and the parents hope that their kids can receive a good education that help to lift them out of poverty. You can find many stories like this one on this site, but to me, these are the ones that have touched my life as a teacher. I accompany them and I've been lucky to see how many of them, through music, have felt fulfillment and gained confidence and sense of belonging . I try to empower them and make them proud: they are capable to do whatever and they just have to believe it!

My Project

The Music Room is a project that looks to expose the students to the joy of experiencing music. Because of the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the neighborhood, I soon came to the conclusion that an approach to popular music through the use of Modern Band ensembles would fit perfectly my purpose and the interests of the students. During the first years, I have focused on the teaching of keyboards and guitars: At the beginning of the class the students learn to play those instruments and during the second part we put together famous rock & pop songs that we share with the community. This year the ambition has gone further than ever: many students have expressed the desire to get more drumming practices, others would like to try DJing and electronic music. I've spent months thinking out lesson plans and viable ways of making this happen and I'm sure that using the Electronic Drumset, a Dj Controller and gear (headphones, strings, drum pads) can be an exciting experience that will give my kids more of those unforgettable moments that only music can give us!

Getting the drum set, the DJ console, the drum pads and all the other gear, will provide my students the opportunity of making music at a level they have never experienced!

Not only I want them to learn the joy of making music but, through music, I also try to provide positive experiences that give them confidence and the impulse to continue working towards their education and dreams. I put my time and my passion and with your help I hope to make this project happen!! :-D
