This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a bilingual speech and language pathologist, I work with students with communication disorders that negatively impact their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in a low-income K-8 school in Queens, NY. All of my students are English Language Learners and 50% of them came to the US just a year or less ago. They are sweet kids who come to the speech therapy room with a positive attitude and willing to learn. However, their reading and writing skills are well below grade level in both languages, and their difficulties with decoding and encoding words negatively impact their ability to understand what they read, and express their ideas and opinions about texts.

My students need the Recipe for Reading materials to improve their reading skills.

The Recipe for Reading program targets the five pillars of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension). Materials from this program follow a research-based scope and sequence that addresses reading and writing.

With your donation, my English Language Learner students will have the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to become successful readers and thinkers. "A Child who reads will be an adult who thinks."
