Help Ms. Seewald

I am the reading specialist at a K-4 elementary school, and work with struggling readers at each grade level. Some of my students just don’t like to read and this contributes to their difficulty. Because of their lack of interest, they don’t read often outside of school, and their reading does not improve. My school librarian runs an amazing program called Accelerated Reader. With this program, the students read books on their own and then take a short comprehension quiz on the computer. Students earn points for the quizzes they take as long as they do well on them. With the points they earn, students can buy things like water bottles, Frisbees, towels, t-shirts, Borders gift certificates, etc. from our Accelerated Reader store. Our whole school gets involved in the program and each grade has a goal of a certain number of points each nine weeks. Then, at the end of the year we have an Accelerated Reader carnival. Each teacher sets up a booth at the carnival, and the students get one ticket for each point that they earned during the entire school year to spend on games and food at the carnival. This program is amazing for my students! Because of all the hype throughout the school my students really get involved. They WANT to read Accelerated Reader books so that they can earn points. The more books they want to read, the more reading practice they get, and the better readers they become! I have seen this program work wonders for my students. The problem that I have is that I need more books on my students’ level. I am trying to develop a classroom library of Accelerated Reader books so that I can make sure each of my students gets to read books on their individual level. If my students are able to pick out their books in my classroom I will be able to steer them in the right direction. I want this to continue to be encouraging to them. I worry that if they are able to choose books outside of my classroom without my guidance, they may get books that are too hard for them and will end up being discouraged. Please help me acquire a classroom library of Accelerated Reader books! I love to see my students’ proud faces when they have read enough books to reach their Accelerated Reader goal!
