Let's Read Mom... Preschoolers Reading At Home!

My students need 22 preschool illustrated books, including "Curious George Goes to an Ice Cream Shop" and "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", along with iron transfers.

Now my preschoolers with special needs can read at home with their families! I teach preschool students with special needs ranging from severe speech delays to physical impairments and autism. My school is an early childhood school focused on supporting students with a wide variety of special needs. Most of my students have difficulty expressing themselves and understanding language.

As many of my students have very little language to communicate with their peers and adults, it's difficult for them to express their knowledge and read with their families at home. Often parents of my students express challenges with grabbing their child's interest in reading books at home as well as keeping their interest. Throughout the years, I've begun to make felt and sock puppets in order to help them interact with books. They've loved it and finally find joy in reading with them. Not only are they loving reading at home but their parents say their child is now using the puppets to tell the story. I'm so excited to provide this for my students but now that I'm in a new school, I don't have books to go with the puppets I've made! Now I also want to make sturdier bags out of fabric rather than using Ziploc bags that are easily destroyed. With these book bags, I can also read with them in the classroom and work with them on increasing their language skills and independence using simple and familiar books with corresponding puppets. When my preschoolers use the puppets with the books, I see their eyes light up and their interest peaked as they finally are able to 'read' a book on their own!

You can help these families and children have fun and interactive story times at home and at school! With these classic board books that are simple and focus on a variety of early skills such as colors, sequences and numbers, my preschoolers can enjoy learning at home with their families. Also, the iron-on transfer will help me make book bags to hold the books and puppets to make it special (and sturdy) to use at home and at school.

Your help will bridge the language gap for these parents and their children with severe language impairments and make reading and learning fun. With these materials, I can make book bags for my preschoolers to check out to read at home and interact with their families using puppets and their favorite children stories. They'll finally be able to use the puppets with the books you provide with this project to increase their learning and excitement in reading!
