I teach 20 economically, culturally, and intellectually diverse kindergarten students in an urban school district. In my classroom, I strive to ensure that each child's needs are met, whether they are emotional, physical, or academic. Kindergarten is the foundation for a child's future academic success. I try to foster a love for learning as I teach them how to read, express themselves through writing, investigate scientific topics, and apply mathematical concepts. All my students are very unique with varying interests.
Our kindergarten class is full of 20 excited and passionate students who are eager to become lifelong learners.
My class is just one of four kindergarten classrooms in our school. As a grade level, we try to provide many events that give children an opportunity to gain experiences that they would not have had otherwise. One such event is the Fairy Tale Ball, which allows students to dress up as their favorite fairy tale characters and are announced as they walk down the red carpet. They are taught the proper etiquette for asking and receiving a dance invitation and how to behave in a formal setting. I believe that each student deserves as many opportunities as possible.
My Project
In a world full of devices, I believe that the most precious gift that I can give my students is to read aloud to them multiple times a day. Marilyn Jagger Adams said, "Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require to learn to read."
I want my students to love books!
The only way that can happen is for them to hear amazing books read aloud every single day. In order to do that, my classroom needs to be full of great literature that we can pick up and read all throughout the day.
The books provided by this project will first be read for enjoyment, then they will be used for many other purposes such as gaining information, retelling, relating to characters, and making connections. Then my students will use the art supplies that are provided by this project to create a visual picture of what they have learned. Students love to get their hands on art supplies and get messy! When they create a visual that relates to the learning it is a connection that they never forget. I can't wait to see all the beautiful art my students will create as they develop a love for reading!
