Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

With budget cuts and high stakes testing there is little art in the classroom. We have minimal supplies and certainly no art teacher. Art offers the highest form of analysis and synthesis of ideas. Students need a chance to express themselves and bring ideas together in with purpose and skill.

I work at an inner city school in Los Angeles that has a focus on Science, Math and Technology.

Our school is a Title 1 school and over 90% of our students qualify for free lunch. Our population is largely Latino and African American with a large population of English Language Learners. My students are very dedicated to learning and their community. Many of the families are immigrants and all the families are working hard so that their children may have a better life and access to higher education. Many of the parents come in for workshops and classes, and they are learning alongside with their children. This year I already know my upcoming class, and they are a joy to teach. They have challenges, like all students, but they have a passion for learning. I want to feed that passion, to keep it alive, so that they don't drop out and they make it to college. That is why I need to do more for them, like literature circles, to keep them engaged and coming to school each day

My Project

We need 30 stretched canvases to create self-portraits for a study in classic and contemporary portraiture. This year I want to push art lessons beyond the simple self-portrait that so many teachers put up for back to school night. We will study several classic and contemporary portraits and discuss how they are used to convey messages about the person portrayed. Through this unit the students will reflect on who they are, who they want to be, and how they would like to represent themselves. This will be an experience that will build a positive identity, self-esteem and community within the classroom. After reviewing the elements of portraits and basic painting techniques the students will bring in clothes and objects that they would like to include in their own portraits to pose for photos. They will also explore the importance of body language and experiment with different poses. For their final piece the students will paint a self-portrait on canvas.

My students need more exposure to arts, more chances to be creative, and more opportunities to be validated as individuals.

The canvas will give the activity a feeling of importance and authenticity. Art is powerful tool for expressing our understandings of the world and ourselves. These lessons will demand a higher level of thinking for students, which will both challenge and engage them. In the end, by accomplishing their masterpiece, they will feel they have accomplished something grand.
