My Students

Trauma-related issues are an experience that many students and teachers in my building are dealing with daily.

Students come to high school to learn but often find it impossible to focus and absorb what we're trying to teach them due to trauma, mental health issues or family problems.

Teachers spend too much of their time managing conflict and disruptions and sometimes are not able to address all of the needs of all students when they arise. EVERYONE needs a refuge from the negativity and stress and find ways to cope.

The STEP program wants to create a positive space for learning and healing.

My Project

Sometimes students find lunchtime to be a traumatic or stressful time where there are a lot of outside triggers and stimuli. Some kids are very shy or anxious and the idea of sitting alone or not being welcome at a table can make them skip lunch, sit in the bathroom, or hang out in the hallways and try to be invisible.

The noise and high stimulation of the building can also trigger past traumas making it tough to focus on school and learning.

Some students need a quiet, safe, private space to talk to each other about grief and loss and depression or feeling different. This space will also be used for therapy and support groups.

Teachers are in front of students in sometimes very trying and stressful situations. Having a refuge to meditate and decompress together could help them recharge and keep doing the wonderful work they do!

A calm, positive, supportive refuge to turn to so students and teachers can relax and recharge during the day is really needed. But the community at our high school doesn't have any such place.

I’m the Clinical Coordinator of our building's STEP program and I want to create an oasis within the school to serve many functions: lunchtime lounge; a group therapy room; a meditation space for students and teachers; a space to help students learn restorative justice and mediation skills.

Please help the STEP program create this much-needed oasis within our school! Thank you so much for your support!
