Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a first grade teacher, working in an urban high-poverty area of New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse educational needs. However, what they all have in common is the beautiful excitement and love they have for learning.

Even though most of them come from difficult backgrounds, they continue to work hard and do all that they can to learn.

I truly love what I do, and I'm grateful to have such a great community of learners in my class! Every morning I am greeted with 21 huge smiles. I want my students to know that they are important, and I will do anything I can to help them reach their fullest potential because they deserve the best.

My Project

My students work hard every day to retain so much information, that educational games will not just teach them more, but it will give them a break from their usual learning styles. Since my students work hard, they deserve to be rewarded with some "fun learning".

There is a very wide range of scholars in my classroom; yet, each of them need continuous practice in mastering sight words and addition and subtraction facts; what better way is there to do that then with GAMES!

Students will continue to reinforce their sight word knowledge by playing sight word bingo and fishing for sight words. Not only will these games help with the recognition of these crucial words, but they will help them write them too. The phonics game will help them learn letter sounds, digraphs, and long and short vowels, which is something many children have trouble with. The math games will allow students to practice addition and subtraction facts and learn how to tell time, a skill they will need in their daily lives.

These games will teach my students how to use different strategies while giving them the confidence to try answering questions they may not normally attempt to do. I want to provide a classroom environment in which every student, regardless of their reading and math levels, can feel successful, whether that is from an assessment or sight word bingo.
