Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are AMAZING fourth graders, who deserve the very best! They are fun, energetic and creative, and I love to showcase their spectacular talents. The school where I teach is considered "high poverty," so some students do not have the same opportunities as others. Everyone qualifies for free lunch in the Title 1 program.

Although my students are not diverse in race and background, they are all creative by nature and very different in the way they learn.

Our urban school is located in a community that supports the arts, STEM, and extracurricular activities. Many students come into school looking forward to simple things like taking a photo, singing a song, or getting a hello from a friend. For some of them, this interaction is the only positive part of their day.

My Project

I am very grateful that Target is encouraging kid inspired projects that promote health. My students crave opportunities to move away from the same old routines in the classroom and on the yard.

When polled, students asked for a combination of indoor and outdoor changes.

To begin, outdoors, they would like their 60 minutes of morning and afternoon recess to include new sports equipment. Due to budget constraints, our school has very low quality recess equipment choices. The recess packs and the storage benches that they are requesting will help them with a much needed quality and variety upgrade. Being part of a team excites them but even just tossing a Frisbee is an exciting prospect.

To continue, indoors, they have had experiences in other classrooms with alternative seating. They know about Hokki stools and stand up stations. They are requesting 2 of each to be able to have options and stretch and move as often as possible. They get the wiggles just like any kid and I agree that it will help them with their focus when they can exert some of that energy while learning.

I am optimistic and look forward to giving my students upgrades and options with this project. They are great kids and deserve it! Thank you!
