Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my 26th year working with students with special needs, but my first full year of working with elementary aged students! My students are in grades Kindergarten, Second, Third, and Fifth. Each has unique needs and skill levels.

All of my students struggle to learn on computers and need hands-on activities.

They are below their grade level and ALL come from low income families and receive free breakfast and lunches. However, my greatest joy is seeing their smiling faces when they see that they too can learn, grow, and be the same as other students! Last year, I had a student that worked really hard with me and went from a 2nd grade reading level to a 4th grade reading level! He couldn't believe how much he had improved from the previous year!

My Project

Have you ever tried to learn something and no matter how many times someone said it to you, it just didn't make sense? You probably did better when they showed you pictures and gave you examples. Now, if you then took that instruction and did it yourself, with your hands, I bet you would understand it even better! This is how my students learn! I work at an Elementary School in an urban, low economic neighborhood with half the budget that the general education teachers receive, with students who have disabilities, and yet my students are the best students ever! They deserve to have materials to learn with that are interactive and fun.

My students will be so surprised when we begin using fun and interactive materials!

Instead of teaching reading with cards and books I find, my students will be using games, interactive learning activities, and having so much fun, they won't know how much they are learning! Student's with special needs learn differently. Even in small groups, directly teaching to my student's, does not bring learning. For example. Student's need to learn word families: bat, cat, mat, hat. Using the Word Family Flip Books, several students can use a book with "at" on the right card. Then, by flipping the first card with different letters, students will learn more of the possible words spelled with different beginning sounds.

Another opportunity these supplies will provide my students is the chance to learn social interaction. Several of the items like the Pirate Island Reading for Details Games are played by more than one student at a time. This encourages turn taking, communication, fosters friendships, and engages the students in interactive fun as well.
