My students are not your typical middle school students. We are a K-8 school and only have 300 "middle school" students compared to the middle schools in the region that have more than that per grade level. Our middle schoolers are the leaders and set the proper examples for the rest of the elementary students. This unique situation gives ample opportunity for them to mentor the K-3 whom we lovingly refer to as "The Littles." Over the past year, they have held an Ecology Carnival and at STEM Night "How To Make Slime," for "The Littles."
The passion the 7th graders show when teaching to "The Littles" and seeing the knowledge they have gained getting passed down again it great to see.
We talk a lot about building community at our school and the 7th graders take this to heart. They are always looking for more ways to include the younger grades in activities with them. Whether it is making pumpkin volcanoes or playing with them after school they find ways to make our community that much stronger throughout the year.
My Project
My students want to be able to record certain activities in class to turn in via Canvas instead of writing or using still photography. Unfortunately, technology is expensive and I assigned them the task of figuring out with a budget of $200 how we can get a class set of recording devices. Luck for them we came across a handful of digital video recorders passed down from the high school years ago. Technology has passed these items by and while they are still functional they can not communicate with our newer computers without some help. These items will help my students bring life back into the DVRs.
The 7th graders are learning that old technology is still good technology, they just have to figure out how to get it all to talk to one another without breaking the bank.
They want to record their labs, mentoring with younger students, and make video assignments. The only way to do this was to figure out an economical way to get "working" cameras along with their cost to maintain and buy storage.
