My Project

I have students who love to learn hands-on, such as using math manipulatives and using movement around the classroom. The population of students in this class are young, and some students have special learning needs. Therefore, students with special learning needs will benefit from using math manipulatives during math instruction. However, my students do not have enough math manipulatives. Using ten frames, floor mats, and whiteboards with number lines, as manipulatives, will be great tools to have in the classroom to make math concrete, real, and interactive for students. It will also allow them to show their math thinking.

My 1st grade class consists of general education, special education, and ESL learners who are motivated and curious to learn when they are engaged in real and authentic hands-on experiences.

Having math manipulatives supports our Title I school belief that our diverse population learning needs must be met in a variety of ways. When my students use math manipulatives, they also focus better and perform higher on school examinations.

You will be helping my students learn in variety of ways by having access to these math tools that are significant for students in a special needs classroom to use in first grade.

In first grade, it is important for students to learn using manipulatives and doing hands-on activities to gain a deeper understanding of math concepts. For instance, when students are learning addition and subtraction, they need to be able to see and feel the counters and ten frames to move them around and count.

Lastly, students are truly engaged and more successful in math when they are able to use manipulatives and movement.
