Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students and I have brainstormed ways to make newcomer students feel welcomed and included, and ways to help them develop their English with fun, engaging, hands-on activities.

We need dress-up clothing, such as astronaut suits, explorer hats, and vests to use drama, reader's theater, and role-playing to develop their English language.

We also need colored copy paper to create anchor charts with visuals and sentence frames for our newcomers and markers to make the visuals more appealing to students.

Teaching language through drama and reader's theater allows newcomers to practice speaking English in a fun way with their peers. My students will serve as models so our newcomers can connect language with gestures, using their body to promote total physical response (TPR), an effective English language teaching strategy. My students love science and agree that by including hands-on science lessons, our newcomer students will feel motivated to participate.

My hope is for my little ones to learn that problems can be solved when using our voice to speak out, and then coming up with a plan of action to do something about it!
