Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to learn, and I want them to have the foundational skills they need in math to succeed now and in their future school experiences. Did you enjoy learning math skills? It's my goal for them to not only learn math thoroughly, but to enjoy the experience of learning as well.

All of my students are ELLs (English Language Learners) and students of low SES (socio-economic status) who do not have the resources and materials for learning at home.

I teach the pre-production first grade class at my school. That means all of my students are struggling to learn the English Language. They begin school without the foundational skills and background knowledge that students from more affluent families have. I would like to have resources in my classroom that they can use to help them become successful in math. The school that I work for is a Title 1 school with limited funding. The school has basic math manipulatives for students to use. I would like to provide them with tools to help them develop strategies to work with numbers to solve equations and see number patterns.

My Project

My students would greatly benefit by having a class set of Rekenrek, a large Rekenrek, and Rekenrek activity books. Rekenreks help students to develop addition and subtraction strategies, as well as seeing patterns of 5's and 10's. Rekenreks also help students represent and visualize mathematical thinking. Since my students have limited English skills, these would help them "see" what I am talking about in class. They would get to see what groups of numbers look like and help them understand what addition and subtraction is. Rekenreks are powerful tools to help develop students' mathematical understanding.

Having a class set of Rekenrek would be a blessing to me and my students.

My school has very limited funding, and I spend a lot of my own money each year in my classroom. As much as I love my students I cannot give them what they need on my own. Having a class set of Rekenrek would help my students succeed in math. It would also give them a visual tool to help them understand basic math concepts. Once students have a strong foundation in math, they can understand more complex mathematical ideas.
