This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers." ~Charles W. Eliot Textbooks are fine, but books are better! My English language learners are in desperate need of a high-interest classroom library.

These 7th and 8th grade middle school students live in a high poverty area of Northern California.

They are from all over the world: El Salvador, Vietnam, Mexico, Nicaragua, and the Philippines. Having been in the U.S. for only a short time, they need a lot of accessible, high-interest reading that isn't about teddy bears and fluffy bunnies. A nonfiction library would be perfect for them and help them learn a variety of vocabulary.

My Project

Have you ever taken a foreign language class? Can you speak that language fluently now? Foreign language textbooks are notorious for teaching grammar and vocabulary, but not giving students what they need to become fluent. ELL students need more than textbooks. They need opportunities to read and make presentations and reports in English. Please help us build a library of high-interest nonfiction books that the students can write book reports and make presentations about, and use to increase their vocabulary and fluency.

These English Language Learners can't succeed in American schools unless they can understand, speak, read, and write in English.

They need help and support in order to become fluent. Help me provide these newcomers with accessible, engaging books about a range of nonfiction topics that won't make them feel embarrassed about reading "little kid" books.
