My Students

Access to captivating books that students are able to read independently and enjoy reading needs to be a reality in our 5th grade classroom.

My students enjoy reading, however most have very few books at home to read independently.

Our school is located in a high poverty area and only 5 of my 32 students speak English as their 1st language. Many come from the Middle East and Mexico and our school provides them with a safe place to learn. Unfortunately, like most schools, our budget has been cut so greatly, that money for purchasing books is not available. All of my students enjoy a good story and when I read books like Maniac Magee and The Phantom Tollbooth aloud, they were able to immerse themselves in the rich language that these books provide and enjoyed wonderful stories.

My Project

Having new literature circle books will enable my students to read interesting stories while at the same time improving their fluency and comprehension. The more fluent a child becomes, the easier it is for them to read unknown words quickly. As a child's comprehension improves, their understanding of what they are reading gets better and this allows them to read fiction and non-fiction with greater confidence and understanding. It also allows them to begin reading more advanced writing such as their textbooks. I will use these books during language arts time to run literature circles. Students will be placed in groups according to their reading levels and will get a chance to read together, discuss the story and write about what they are reading. These literature circles are crucial to improve my students reading abilities.

As students improve in their reading skills, their writing skills naturally follow and this leads to a more literate classroom, school, and society.

Helping my class will mean better language arts instruction and students who can and want to read. Please help us to reach our goal.
