This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Many ESL students come without previous knowledge of our alphabet! I teach K-5 English as a Second Language in three high-poverty schools. My students come from many backgrounds speaking Spanish, Russian, Burmese, Amharic, Tagalog, German, and other languages. Many have a parent who comes to serve in our military.
When a new student arrives not even knowing the alphabet, imagine how far behind their peers they are! My curriculum lacks the hands-on manipulatives and activities that these children need. Because of the recent downturn in our economy and the resulting loss of jobs and income, the families I serve are becoming increasingly dependent upon the school for help in meeting the basic needs of their children.
With a variety of learning tools, my students will learn letter-sound correspondence, build vocabulary skills, and begin the exciting journey of learning a new language! This project includes learning about the world of WH? Questions, word families, sight word manipulatives, Eric Carle games to accompany his award-winning books, and Grammar games.
Your help will ensure that no matter what age a student is when he/she moves to our country, I will have powerful tools to help them master our alphabet, learn our difficult English language, and engage them in learning for a lifetime!
