Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a Special Education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are constantly facing challenges both in and out of school. Many of them are being raised in single parent households/shelters, by grandparents, or foster parents. They receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Even with the many challenges they face, my ultimate goal is to keep things as simple as possible and provide my students with resourceful and significant learning experiences.

My students are a good "different"; They have emotions like me and all come in wanting to learn.

My 3 classes consist of students with a range of disabilities/needs, which include autism, emotional disturbance, intellectual disabilities, English Language Learners, speech & language/hearing impairment and other learning disabilities. Some of the students in my classes read up to 2 to 3 levels below their actual grade level (based on F&P). At least 90% of the students within our school are Latino or African American. These students are our future and I would like to give them a great launch to their successful career full of many experiences and opportunities!

My Project

Can you believe that today there are still many teachers, especially in urban schools, that are working with at-risk students with very few of the necessary resources to support them?!

No teacher should have to worry about not being able to provide the most basic resources for their students.

I consider myself lucky. I've built pleasant relationships with students who grow up in low-income areas with daily struggles. It's truly heart breaking to hear some of their stories and have them show up at my classroom door lacking far more than school supplies.

As I prepare for the 2017-18 school year, I want to make sure my students have the basics for a successful year of learning. I've created this project with the goal of putting a smile on my students' faces as they walk into class, not having to spend time looking for a pencil, Reading/Writing notebook, and class folders. I always tell my students "Every second in Ms. P's ELA class counts!"

With these supplies, I plan to start a new pencil system. This (I will assign a creative name to) will allow all of my students to have enough pre-sharpened pencils (reason I put the sharpener on the list to prepare weekly) and erasers to last them the entire school year. Yay!! The system will help the students build responsibility for their tools as I model with my personal classroom belongings. Students who demonstrate their progress with this system will be rewarded when their pencil pouches are collected every Friday for review/replenishment. Who would've thought that PENCILS & erasers would be one of my nightmares. If you are a teacher or know someone who is, you know what I'm talking about! With your help, we can make this project a reality! We thank you in advance!
