My Students

My students come from incredibly diverse backgrounds. My school is a melting pot in the best way possible. They bring so many cultures and languages to our school.

However, the majority of my students come from a low socioeconomic background with limited experiences, and background knowledge of the world around them.

My students are currently transitioning from a fiction unit to a nonfiction unit and they are devouring the books in front of them, taking in new information about various animals. I have never seen a group move through nonfiction books so quickly, this is most definitely a high interest area for them. Even my reluctant readers are diving in, looking at the images, and gaining all the cool information they can!

My Project

Narrative Nonfiction is becoming more and more relevant for our students' testing. However, there are limited ways for us to expose our students to these types of texts in an engaging way. I am noticing that our students are loving our nonfiction books in our classroom, and have been devouring books about their favorite subjects.

I have complied this list of books with the help of some students in my classroom to ensure the books will be high interest books they can’t wait to get their hands on.

Our students today are expected to think more abstractly, make more inferences, and gain knowledge in different ways. These books will help our students get exposed to different writing styles and ways that nonfiction can be written. Additionally it will help keep their interest and love for reading grow!
