My Students

As a teacher in a low income school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking forward to providing them with an exciting and rich learnining environment. Our school is a Title I inner city school in New York City. Our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Some of them live in homeless shelters in other boroughs. They have to travel very far to maintain some stability in their lives. Some of them are also learning disabled with individual education plans. However they love learning and are working hard to change their narratives as well as the history of their community.

My Project

My students need books, puppet, coin stamps, calculators, storage cart, and play groceries sets to learn about financial literacy. I want to help my students discover the relationship between earning, spending and saving money. I strongly believe that in teaching my students these skills ; they will begin to understand the value of money at an early age. I will integrate these lessons during math and social studies. During these periods student will learn how to add and subtract numbers. They will be given a food budget. Then they will research items that they will need to make their favorite meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner. With a partner

They will then make a list of food items that they think is needed to make their meal of choice.

They will then shop for food items that is needed to do so in our class convent store. This store will be run like a cooperative. Students will research various jobs. They will also have the opportunity to apply for jobs that is advertise at the store. They will learn how fill out a job application and interviewing for their choice jobs. This project will introduce them to how money helps to provide for their needs and wants. Also how a business work . What better way to do so than through interactive learning; using puppet, toys, manipulatives and activity kits. I can't wait to see the excitement on their faces as they venture into financial literacy with these supporting tools.
