Hearing "Thank you, Miss." at the end of the class period means the world to me! These are the type of students I teach in Maspeth, Queens, New York. Most people would not expect this from middle school students. However, this sense of gratitude motivates me in countless ways as their science teacher. Our school serves a diverse community of students in grades 6-8 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment. Many students have many obstacles posing as roadblocks, but they seem very determined to learn and excel.
They come a variety of backgrounds and cultural influences that I totally appreciate and enjoy learning about.
I enjoy seeing them work collaboratively and learn from each other. I learn from them, as well, and look forward to every day!
I truly believe that students learn by doing. I love the using the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiative in my lessons to truly involve students in their learning and acquiring science skills necessary to excel in high school and beyond. I believe that as my students use design and critical thinking skills through designing and building, they will continue to grow as real-world problem solvers and formulate strategies to make things work.
They will evolve into more efficient independent learners and community builders.
With the K'Nex, students can watch their imaginations come to life in 3D. The K'nex building sets give a real-world feel for machines and structures that children seldomly get to experience. They see the actual mechanics behind how these different structures work, such as the amusement park rides, and the basic thought that is put into their construction and proper operation.
My students enjoy having hands-on activities that connect to the concepts they are learning in class and anticipate what we're doing everyday. My challenge, however, is not having sufficient supplies. I definitely look forward to seeing how this project will help them become more proficient critical thinkers and problem solvers. I also look forward to witnessing their minds expand with the experience of using K'Nex! Thank you in advance!!
