Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Even though I currently teach 7th grade, I've found that one of the best ways to stay connected to my former students is through high interest book clubs. Reading for pleasure with a bunch of your friends is a great way to keep reluctant young readers with their nose in a book!

The students involved in the Boys' Book Club are a boisterous group of 8th graders.

They're sweet and funny, nervous about high school, and in the past have been very reluctant to read. I've heard every member of the group say things like, "I don't read!" or "I suck at reading!" With the introduction of Boys' Book Club, these reluctant readers have had their interest in reading re-sparked! We meet every week to discuss the agreed upon chapters and check in on their lives. Our school is in one of Brooklyn's poorest neighborhoods, with nearly everyone qualifying for free and reduced price lunch. Typically my students don't have access to exciting or interesting books at home. This club, and the growing library of books, gives them a purpose for reading and a weekly group that they're excited to participate in.

My Project

These books will help transform my students from young people who don't see themselves as readers to young men who are proud of the accomplishment of finishing multiple books. We're currently reading our first book together, and the boys check in with me nearly every day to update me on their progress. I have taught some of these students for years, and until now, I had never been successful in getting them to read on their own. For the first time, I'm seeing students who were reluctant readers come to our group each week with pages flagged that they want to discuss and theories about the characters they're reading about. With the addition of these six new books, I will be able to keep the Boys' Book Club going through the end of the school year. I want to send these students off to high school, knowing that they're confident readers on their own.

These text sets of high interest books will give seven young men a purpose for reading!

Please help keep these students on the right path by showing them that reading can be pleasurable and can help your mind grow. As they get ready for high school, these 8th graders need a safe place to talk out their fears and connect to characters going through similar issues. Please help keep Boys' Book Club alive!
