My Students

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world, Nelson Mandela.

Our elementary school is in a large urban neighborhood near downtown Dallas with the majority of our 350 students coming from economically disadvantaged homes.

Our school's three specials teachers, meaning the teachers that teach music, art and PE, see all 350+ students in the school at least once a week. Our students are musicians, artists, athletes, dreamers, scholars and future leaders.

40.1% of our students are considered at risk, 70.2% of our students are considered low socioeconomic standing and 24.4% are English language learners. In school the major focus is on reading, writing, math and science. While these are important subjects, they do not provide the necessary physical and creative outlets children need to thrive. Ask any elementary student what their favorite part of their day was, and they will likely say the time they spent in music, art or PE.

My Project

All classrooms need basic necessities in order to run smoothly. These items include tissues, disinfecting wipes, paper towels, hand soap, batteries, and more. Some of these items are especially important during flu season.

Specials teachers get a very small budget for all 350+ students, and it is a disadvantage to our amazing students to spend this limited money on cleaning supplies and simple classroom necessities rather than creative, hands-on materials.

While grade level teachers are able to send home a supplies list at the beginning of the year, the specials teachers unfortunately do not have a homeroom class to send a supplies list to. Additionally, as a Title 1 school, many of our students can not afford basic supplies for their classrooms let alone supplies for their music, art and PE class.

By funding this project you are helping to ensure that every penny of our very limited budget is spent on learning supplies for the children, and not basic cleaning supplies.
