This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Throughout the year, my students work on a research project about the adaptations of an animal of their choice with the intention of writing and illustrating a book called "Our Big Book of Animals." We visit the American Museum of Natural History and the NY Aquarium so students can learn more and get excited about their animals. After conducting extensive research, students are taught how to make their writing more interesting by using a hook sentence to introduce each paragraph, and by using a thesaurus to select better descriptive words. After they write about the adaptations of their animal we spend time learning about poetic devises, such as onomatopoeia, similes and free verse poetry. Students are then tasked with writing a poem about their animal. Once they have completed the writing portion of the book, they get to illustrate it.

Illustrating their animals is always the students' favorite part.

In order to make this task accessible to all students, whether or not they have natural artistic abilities, students use a photo to trace the shape of their animal onto paper using special carbon paper. Once they have a basic outline, they are able to use markers, watercolors and color pencils to create a realistic image of their animal. I am a science teacher, so I don't normally have art supplies in my classroom. Funding for this project will give my students all the supplies they need to illustrate their animals to the best of their ability. My students take tremendous pride in their illustrations and their drawings make their book come to life. I hope you will support this project. Thanks.
