My Project
As a 5th-grade teacher at an inner-city Title I school in Eastern North Carolina, I am passionate about providing my students with hands-on learning experiences that connect them to nature and their community. We are seeking funding to create a school garden using both traditional soil-based methods and a hydroponic system. This garden will be located in a high-traffic area of our school, allowing community members, parents, students, and even our schoolyard chickens to benefit from it.
The grant will fund essential gardening supplies, including seeds, potting soil, a hydroponic system, and plants to propagate.
By incorporating a hydroponic system, our students will gain exposure to modern agricultural techniques, understanding how to grow plants without soil. This experience will not only enhance their science education but also teach them responsibility, teamwork, and the importance of sustainability.
The garden will produce fresh vegetables and herbs that can be shared with the school community, enhancing our school’s nutrition programs and feeding our chickens. It will also serve as a vibrant, green space that beautifies our school and provides a sense of pride and ownership for our students.
