Let's Grow: Seed to Success - Green Thumbs Garden Club

Help me give my students the supplies to plant our pollinator, herb, bulb, shade, and 2 memorial garden beds in the school courtyard. The greenhouse will help us start seeds and the hampers will make soil installation easier.

My Project

Our Green Thumbs Garden Club is a youth-focused gardening program focused on promoting sustainable practices, local food systems, and environmental education with activities like hands-on gardening from seeding to harvest, seed-starting, and activities centered around learning gardening skills and fostering a love of nature.

The project goal is to establish shared garden green spaces where youth can learn about plants, gardening techniques, growing their own food, seed starting, composting, rainwater harvesting, natural pest control, and soil health.

The items requested will make a difference in the kids’ learning by providing a wide range of flower, herb, and vegetable seeds that can be grown and observed during the growing season. The kids will learn how to keep a garden journal to record plant profiles, planting date, bloom times, beneficial insects, nutrient deficiencies, pest problems, plant diseases, solutions to garden problems, harvesting time, and yield. The garden site has 6 brick-lined beds in the center of the school courtyard, and the chosen themes are "Healing Herbs, Phenomenal Pollinators, Sheltered Shade, and Blessed Blooms". There are 2 memorial beds erected in honor of past educators. One has an heirloom apple tree as its focus, and the other has a large star covered with passionflower vines. The kids refreshed a large USA map that is in the center of the courtyard, and they have used repurposed materials to add fencing along the edges of the beds.

The greenhouse will allow the group to start more seeds indoors, the rolling cart will provide a place to store garden tools, and the hampers will be a huge help when soil is installed in the beds.
