My Students

My students are a vivacious and tenacious group of first graders that never want to stop learning. We have formed a class community based on communication, trust, friendship, growth and kindness. We listen to one another, talk through conflicts and set goals as a class. The last six weeks, my students have been thrown into a world of unknowns where the comforts of school can only somewhat be transmitted through a screen.

Working in a Title I school may mean that most of my students fall below the poverty line with some living in shelters but this doesn't impact their curiosity to learn more and desire to be back in school.

Although we are able to engage our students when teaching live, almost all of my students have told me they yearn to come back to school to be able to play with our STEM bins, read our books and play together. I can't bring them back to the classroom (regardless of how much I would love to be in a room with them one more time) but I can give them STEM materials and art materials to keep learning at home.

My Project

While in school, DonorsChoose has allowed me to stock our classroom with STEM bins that students can play and build with creatively. Since at home learning started, my students have told me many times that they wish they could build with bricks, play with Play Doh or just run around our playground. I can't bring my students back to the classroom but I can give them the opportunity to build and create with the materials that they love at home.

Students will each receive an at home package with all the tools necessary to keep building and continue learning--bricks to build and build, jump rope to keep active, Play Doh to be creative and stress balls to stay calm.
