This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a fairly new teacher, my class library is pretty scarce. I came to rely on checking out Chromebooks, which are shared with my 8th-grade team. When it came to reading in our class texts-everything was online. I want to transition to the physical, in hand, books. All of these books have been selected to fit our standards as well as student interests. This past year my students loved holding physical books and being able to check out books from my personal library. They treated these with the utmost respect, love, and care. I always had students looking for more to read and enjoyed the collection I had available.

Students who are more engaged with their reading achieve higher results on their tests within literacy, comprehension, and writing.

This is something I have seen repeated multiple times compared to students who are not engaged with their reading. When students are reading on chrome books in the classroom these results drop even more as distractions become even more available. I want my students to succeed. I want them to enjoy what they read, relate to what they read, and be able to engage with what they read in any physical setting. "Pride and Prejudice" as well as "The Phantom of the Opera" will be used in my Advanced 8th ELA class as a way to challenge their lexicon as well as their regular lessons. "The Princess Bride" is for my regular 8th Grade ELA classes. I chose this book in lieu of a traditional literature piece because students today relate more to fairy tales than other pieces. I use this book, especially during our Figurative Language Unit and students absolutely love it. "Romeo and Juliet" is for both classes to experience HS level reading towards the end of the year.
