My Students

Everyday students enter my Language Arts classroom: some blirt a cheerful greeting, others give a little wave paired with a smile, a few quiet and contemplative: each student wonders, what's the plan today?

I love these spirited students - bright, dynamic, caring, and not afraid to laugh.

I want the plan for each day to include time reading a quality novel. A novel that they will not only beg to read, but one that also models vivid figurative language, a strong and fast moving plot, and, of course, characters that develop to the point that the students expect them to open the door and walk right into our classroom.

My Project

I don't use quality literature to teach students to read. Of course the students' reading ability improves with every novel they travel through - but that's a most delicious additional outcome! I actually use quality literature so that students discover the incredible magic of books. As the students read, they continually analyze the text - including character, plot, exposition, and theme. I always tell my students that reading is the most important skill they can learn - because if they can read, they can teach themselves anything. Help me provide books that capture each and every student so that they are locked into literature for life.
