My Project

My students amaze me every day! Our small sub-separate classroom is overflowing with diversity and kindness. These beguiling and hardworking children come from all kinds of backgrounds, but they have one thing in common...they have Autism. Their high-level of need makes it impossible for them to be included in the general education classroom setting. Their challenges are many and varied, but this does not dissuade them from coming to school each day eager to learn and grow among friends. I am proud to be their teacher and look forward to helping them succeed as they progress through the intermediate grades.

Students with special needs require a variety of support in the classroom and oftentimes support in the area of proprioceptor input (deep pressure) is necessary.

Using deep pressure tools in the classroom such as inflatable pea pods are a much needed tool to help students focus and attend. The input that these pods provide allow boys and girls to immerse themselves in a safe and comfortable space where they can slow down and regroup. Just as a great massage will help relieve stress, a pea pod will help relieve stress while easing tension and anxiety as a sense of restfulness takes over. My goal for this project is simple, and that is to provide all of my students with a variety of tools and strategies to help them remain calm, regulated and ready to learn why they improve overall focus and concentration.
