My Project

After becoming a LEGO Education Ambassador, it has become clear that the needs for our students' classroom include transporting their learning environment into the 21st century.

Students in our English I and grade-level classes engage in hands-on learning with LEGO Education solutions and project-based learning.

While some might wonder if LEGO bricks, or LEGO Education Solutions, are toys; the popular brand has worked with educators across the United States, Canada, and the world for decades encouraging teachers and students from elementary through high school to learn, succeed, and/ or fail in a supportive environment. They've become a part of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) and project-based learning programs. Students ask questions and solve problems. They learn there are multiple answers through their interaction with books, stories, and writing in an active way. As each year's 8th grade students grow in STEAM education, so to do their needs in the classroom.

Active learning desks and seating offer students a space, which reflects the problem-and-solution thinking they'll need, as they complete high school, college, and/ or real world aspirations. The learning desks in our classroom give students more space to spread out papers, books, iPad or hands-on items, such as LEGO bricks.

For example, last year, English I students met in different spaces throughout the classroom to collaborate on a "Romeo and Juliet" newspaper project in which they covered major scenes and events of the Shakespeare drama. As they wrote quotes from characters and examples of situational and dramatic irony, they also created key scenes with LEGO bricks. Students used text evidence and annotations to support the reason for each build.

The "Romeo and Juliet" Newspaper Project demonstrated our students needed more collaborative, as well as individual spaces to work.
