My Students

My students at are all on the Autism Spectrum. We are a self contained classroom with 2 sets of twin girls and three boys in grades kindergarten to second grade. They all receive free breakfast and lunch because they fall below the poverty line.

All year the students have been working hard to improve their social communication skills to increase access to the general education curriculum with a success rate of 40%.

The students have improved their ability to name/label objects, make requests, and answer questions. The students use communication to access both instruction and curriculum in the general education classroom. As the school year ends, I am concerned that the students may loose these skills over the summer break.

My plan is provide each student with a backpack of curriculum items that can support their learning at home, in summer school, camp, and or vacation. Each backpack needs to be individualized to support the areas of need as outlined in the students educational plan to address: communication, motor skills, social skill building, behavior, and functional academics. These materials will allow the students to maintain skills and be ready to learn new skills in September.

My Project

My students love to learn and are very curious about there environment. Through natural environment training, students will be able to use the materials to increase their present levels of performance. However, in past summers my students have lost skills that had been previous mastered.

We all love summer break , but not at the cost of loosing skills.

So, these materials can keep the students engaged in the learning process. The students will be able to maintain previously learned skills. They will practice reading, writing, math, and fine motor skills while engaged with peers. Recoupment of skills helps to get the students ready for a new year of learning. So, let's work together to give them the tools they need to succeed.
