Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My student-athletes are a mixed group of middle and high school students who enjoy sports. We are on the East Side of Las Vegas. This area is notoriously known for being underserved. Our school has over 85% free and reduced lunch, and we provide free tutoring and enrichment programs to expand their horizons.

School closures were detrimental to many, but they disproportionately affected our demographic of students.

Regardless of the hardships, they have faced, they know how to work through difficulty. They have already overcome many obstacles in their young lives, and COVID was an unexpected change for all of us.

These student-athletes are unique. Built within them is a deep respect and understanding of the value and benefit of hard work. They learned this lesson firsthand, whether they are looking out for their siblings, balancing work and school, or just helping out at home.

My Project

The use of parachutes, exercise bands, coaching sticks, and other items in this project will help bring back the fun and intensity to physical activity. According to the Nevada Department of Education, students in school need physical activity to "...develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity." These tools will create both physical and mental challenges to encourage, develop, and strengthen fitness and confidence.

COVID-19 slowed many of us down, but it impacted our youth detrimentally and has had a lasting impact on their mental and physical health.

The goal is simple, provide high-quality, fun, and engaging exercise opportunities for my student-athletes. After such a long break from sports, many students have developed apathy towards physically demanding challenges. Using speed rings, training vests, and coaching sticks will make highly engaging and exciting competitions for students to build teamwork skills and develop physical fitness.

Besides the impact COVID-19 had on students' physical health, both due to sickness and inactivity, the social impact was equal, if not higher. Students have become accustomed to keeping to themselves, working alone, and avoiding contact with others. This project will provide endless chances for positive social interactions, communication skills, team building, and intentional peer connections.
