Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students and families are ready to learn and ready to succeed, supported by strong community involvement and pride in their families, heritage and school. Our school population is 95% Hispanic, with nearly 41% learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Families and teachers prepare students for the pathway to college and career, which is key for our students: the average income for residents within the school's zip code is significantly less than the state's average.

Despite, and often because of, such challenges, our students eagerly participate in both bilingual and monolingual curricula, along with many other opportunities for student growth including technology and engineering projects, ballroom dance, and after school wrap-around programs.

Our attendance is excellent because our students come here to learn and succeed.

My Project

Losing daily recess time to run around outside is one of the hardest adjustments to middle school. It makes children sad; they don't know what to do with their energy. My students are so smart- they came up with an idea and brainstormed ways to make it happen. They would be happy enough staying inside, if they could participate in two activities: Dance,Dance Revolution and Wii Sports. Students, such as Miranda and Izaiah, were able to come up with a recess and end of day time so we could add 60 more minutes of activity and use work-outs as incentives. Maribel and Joanna think it's a great idea to invite students from other homerooms as a special reward.

When we talk about what the class needs, besides the chance to move around and have fun: a plus is that if they can dance and move more, it'd help with the annual Mad Hot Ballroom Dance competition.

Edwin thinks this should convince every adult to support the idea!

The beauty of the class' idea is that it actually works in the limits of time and space. With a Wii system, students can play games that normally require a gym or playground.
