My Students

Our inner-city magnet high school focuses on the STEM areas of energy and engineering. Our entire school is dedicated to project-based learning. Our students are highly engaged in projects that are connected to real world industries sectors and to the local community through interactions with industry professionals, regular exhibitions, and industry-based externships. Robotics is also a significant focus of our school. Seventy-five to one hundred students regularly participate at a world-class level in both VEX and FIRST robotics. My robotics students excel at a variety of team-based competitive projects using the VEX Robotics build platform and the C++ programming language.

Our diverse students are highly engaged in project based learning with real world connections to STEM industry sectors.

We are a Title I magnet high school where students come from neighborhoods all across the city of Houston. Our student body is 57% Hispanic, 22% African American, 4% Asian and 15% White. Sixty-three percent of our student body is economically disadvantaged. While most of our students ride the bus to school, our parents are actively involved in school activities through fundraising and volunteering. Every teacher at our school participates in extracurricular activities including highly successful UIL and robotics programs.

My Project

The Hummingbird robotics system is an Arduino-like platform that fosters collaboration, use of recycled materials and the integration of a wide variety of programming languages. Students will be encouraged and challenged to design and build beyond mobile robotic vehicles. The Hummingbird system includes a variety of sensors, motors and lights that will extend their creative and innovative skills.

Physical computing will take the 21st Century skills of our students to an entirely new level.

Physical computing involves building interactive physical systems by the use of software and hardware that can sense and respond to the analog world.

Our Hummingbird projects will challenge students to design and 3D print a variety of robotic devices and program their devices with multiple programming languages such as Python, MakeCode, Java and SNAP!. An important component will be the integration of recycled materials.

This open-platform physical computing platform powered by multiple programming languages will prepare our students well for a future in which creative and innovative thinking is critical.
