My Students

Our school is a Title One school, meaning at least half of our students get free or reduced-price lunch. We have about twenty-five percent of our student body for whom English is a Second language. About ten percent of those students are newcomers, who speak little, if no English.

My Project

In 1980, just seven percent of kids were considered “obese.” Thirty years later, studies found upwards of one in three kids could be considered “obese.” The culprit of this dramatic rise in childhood obesity is twofold. Americans are eating more and spending less time being active. Kids who spend more time playing outside are less likely to be obese because they are more active. Children are running, jumping, climbing and generally burning more calories than their sedentary counterparts. This grant will be used to get kids outside and moving, specifically playing soccer and participating in an obstacle course. "Soccer" activities like Partner Bridge Challenge where half the class will make a bridge by spreading their feet apart while the other half dribble their soccer ball through the legs of their friends is just one lesson example. While participating in this activity, students will need to remember to use close control, soft touches all the time keeping their eyes up! Kids also love to challenge themselves and creating an obstacle course is a fantastic fun way for them to do that. By creating and participating in the obstacle course, students will be meeting the Physical Education National Standards, specifically by applying the movement concepts of speed, endurance, and pacing for running and analyzing movement situations and applies movement concepts (e.g., force, direction, speed, pathways, extensions).
