Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves a diverse population of students and families with 100% eligible for free lunch. Many come from nontraditional homes being raised my single mothers, grandparents and other family members. Language barriers, can be challenging. In a mainly Hispanic speaking community, they all come in eager and ready to learn. My goal is to ensure that each child is provided a safe and nurturing environment with a focus on building language skills and a desire to learn through hands on activities.

My Project

Being a kindergarten teacher, it is important to include many hands on math, science and critical thinking activities. Using materials like gears, blocks, patterns and memory games allow even the youngest students to get their minds working. It allows children to spend time together to create new things. Learning is more than listening to the teacher and answering questions. Little minds need to think outside the box and get their hands working. Working with partners, groups, friends allow for more heads working together to create little masterpieces. Different activities allow for changes in ideas. Watching different groups of children using the same materials to create different things leads to great classroom conversations.
