My Students

I teach an amazing group of 4th grade students. Many of my students have come from Somalia, Kenya or Ethiopia and speak English as a second language. I have taught at my school for several years and it has been amazing to watch students navigate combining their culture and American culture. They do their best to learn what they are being taught in school while continuing to learn English, academic vocabulary and the skills that are being taught. Many of my students have lived in refugee camps, so I am very proud of all they have accomplished in their lives so far.

We need to get moving.

I need playground equipment for a group of hard working, energetic and fabulous fourth grade students.

My Project

Playing soccer and jumping rope will help maximize learning during class time. Students need the time to move their bodies in a purposeful way to help them focus. Many of the children lived in refugee camps when they were young, which impacted their physical development. The equipment will help them develop physical strength, mobility and coordination. Many of my students lack hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills despite being in 4th grade.

The equipment will help students practice social skills, such as sharing, sportsmanship, following rules, perseverance, teamwork, and so much more.

These are lifelong skills that students need to succeed in life
