This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have all been guilty of fidgeting during staff developments yet we expect our students to sit "nicely" and listen to us in the classroom. Students need to move and release stored up energy to help them focus on academic instruction.

Our school is located in a low socio-economic neighborhood.

Our student population consists of a high number of second language learners. My class is a combination TK/K class, consisting primarily of transitional kindergarten age students. As you can imagine the younger students find it a bit more difficult to adjust to the rigors of full day kindergarten. Although they are troopers, working hard everyday, they too need to have an outlet for all that energy. As part of our P.E. curriculum our students have been learning basic skills such as; throwing, catching, kicking, use of tricycles, yard rules, etc. Like most four and five year olds, my students really enjoy riding the trikes in the kinder yard. Unfortunately our kinder yard is rotated between five kindergarten classrooms and therefore students only get to use it once every five weeks.

My Project

My students need to have access to other equipment to enhance our P.E. instruction. I am asking for 10 plasma cars and helmets in order to help meet their needs. By having the plasma cars at our disposal outside of our assigned kinder yard time, my students would be able to expend that energy in a safe and fun way. Not only would the students be participating in physical activity but would be doing so safely. Students would also learn about helmet safety and improve their gross motor skills. Students would have the added bonus of making use of the plasma cars indoors during inclement weather days.

Recently we have seen a bigger push to get children active and participating in physical activity.

Most students given the opportunity would rather be outside than indoors. This is even more evident whey they are presented with something that sparks interest such as the plasma cars. What could be more interesting that a car with no pedals, how will they get it to move? This would not only be a wonderful addition to our P.E. equipment but also serve as a tremendous incentive for learning.
