My Students

The students I teach are from a high poverty rural area. Last year, I had an intervention classroom where all students either received Title 1 math or Title 1 reading. From teaching this class I learned that not all students learn in the same environment.

All students deserve the same opportunities no matter their socioeconomic status.

This is what I hope to give to all my students. I try to provide them with a safe and caring place to learn day in and day out.

My Project

For the first time in my classroom I am trying flexible seating or as some call it alternative seating. After working with a very active group last year, I came to realize that the standard table and chairs just wasn't working for my students. They would stand at their seats or constantly move back and forth. Then this summer as I did research I came across flexible seating and all it has to offer.

Reflecting on how I work, I have learned that I work best when I am somewhere comfortable; so why wouldn't I provide this for my students.

Right now in my classroom, we have a standing table that I made out of bed risers, wobble seats, a cafe style table with stools, and a table that has been lowered to allow students to sit on the floor with a mat. I want to give my students as many options as possible.

I believe that by giving my students choice in their seating options it will in turn give them choice in their learning. By giving students choice we have learned that they then take more ownership in their learning. I also believe that by giving them a variety of choice in where they sit they will learn about themselves, what works best for them, and how to become an advocate for what they need.
