Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school students live in a high-poverty area that has mainly Spanish speaking families. Most come from large families with several students in different grade levels at multiple schools. We also have many military families.

Most of our students' families have been born and raised in this area so they have a deep and meaningful history in our school district.

Our students deserve the best education we can offer them and sometimes that means having to go outside for help for items the district can't provide.

My Project

I want to help give the dance students the opportunity to look and feel great whenever they perform without asking parents to buy costumes that they might only wear once. I want to help build a dance costume closet that will leave the students at the middle school inspired to continue dancing in their future or at least leave with an appreciation for dance movement, culture, and the arts.

Most recently they performed at their annual spring recital in which students were asked to buy part of the costume attire, unfortunately, some students and parents chose to not perform because they were unable to afford their costume.

We would like to begin the costume closet project beginning with one of the most basic items for dance, jazz pants.

The student class roster ranges between 25-35 students in all classes and the students are both male and female. I asked for a large range of sizes as the students are in middle school and I want to accommodate all the shapes and sizes that are in my class.
